Yet another study has been released that proves that watching Fox News is detrimental to your intelligence. World Public Opinion, a project managed by the Program on International Policy Attitudes at the University of Maryland, conducted a survey of American voters that shows that Fox News viewers are significantly more misinformed than consumers of news from other sources. What’s more, the study shows that greater exposure to Fox News increases misinformation.
So the more you watch, the less you know. Or to be precise, the more you think you know that is actually false. This study corroborates a previous PIPA study that focused on the Iraq war with similar results. And there was an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll that demonstrated the break with reality on the part of Fox viewers with regard to health care. The body of evidence that Fox News is nothing but a propaganda machine dedicated to lies is growing by the day.

Today, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone denying that Fox News Channel has, at least, a conservative slant or is, at worst, an actual wing of the Republican party. But what some who might be too young to remember may not realize is that in the mid-90’s when Fox launched their 24 news network, their imbalance wasn’t as immediately clear. While hard-hitting when it came to President Clinton, it wasn’t until Fox shifted to ultra-jingoism mode after the election of George W. Bush, which some claim the network had a hand in through an early call, that red flags were raised.
So, although it may not be shocking for those who are familiar with Fox’s obvious journalistic ethics violations, as seen in the video above, recent leaked memos are vindication for those of us interested in showing, without relying on mere speculation, that Fox is fixed.
Last week a memo was leaked proving one of Fox’s editorial managers banned the use of the phrase ‘public option’ during the health care debate. As far back as March 2009, Fox reporters and commentators were instructed to use the phrase ‘government option’ in an obvious attempt to frame the issue as a government takeover. Journalism schools will teach reporters, in a situation like this, to use the phrasing used by those putting the idea forward and let it stand or fall on its own merits. The fact that Fox refused to use the language put forth by the Obama Administration show a clear violation of Fox’s former slogan, which they never seemed to be able to live up to, ‘fair and balanced.’
To put it into perspective, Fox changing the name from ‘public option’ to ‘government option’ all on their own would be akin to, say, CNN referring to ‘The War on Terror,’ as declared by the Bush Administration as the ‘War on Islam’ or the ‘Battle for Oil.’ (which they did not). It’s the suggestion of editorializing. It’s not the case that the administration is allowed to dictate the terms that the media uses, but it is the case that the media ought not change the name of a given topic for the purpose of insinuation.
Today, more hard evidence of Fox’s spin came to light when documents concerning global warming issues were leaked. The same Fox editorial manager behind the careful manipulation of ‘government option,’ had this to say about reporting on any climate change issues:
…we should refrain from asserting that the planet has warmed (or cooled) in any given period without IMMEDIATELY pointing out that such theories are based upon data that critics have called into question. It is not our place as journalists to assert such notions as facts, especially as this debate intensifies.
Now, we know that 2.5% of the top 200 climate scientists are even skeptical of people’s impact on rapid climate change, but Fox found this extreme fringe opinion worth pointing out “IMMEDIATELY.” In caps, folks.
This is how conservatives do business. Manipulation.

The greater the disparity in wealth between the very rich and everyone else, the more unstable an economy becomes. Our nation has now created a larger gap in the distribution of wealth than the massive chasm that helped fuel the Great Depression. In 1928, one year before the global economic collapse, the wealthiest .001% of the U.S. population owned 892 times more than 90% of the nation’s citizens. Today, the top .001% of the U.S. population owns 976 times more than the entire bottom 90%. This is not sustainable, and makes for a very volatile economy. It would appear that the American empire is about to crash.
I’ve been saying this for awhile now…

Christ’s definition of violent rhetoric (via azspot) [Matthew 5:22-23] Why would Christians care about what Jesus said? WWJD is a joke. They would sooner quote an Old Testament verse than live by the words of their deity. (via liberalsarecool) |

Louis CK (via mygripmyfocus) A-fuckin-men! I do not understand how it is acceptable to hit someone who weighs at LEAST 100 pounds less than you, just to show them that something they’ve done (like hitting) is wrong. WHAT? All it teaches is that it’s okay to use force, especially on someone weaker and smaller than you, to get what you want. Absolutely abhorrent. (via mamavh) Yep. You hit them too hard, and you’re the custodial parent, *oops* you’ll get a visit from family services. But only if someone saw you do it, or the aftermath. You might go to family court. By all means though, spank their asses til they’re red, it’s your right because you live in one of the few countries where spanking is still legal. (via cognitivedissonance) |
